Dorrigo - Ebor – Cathedral Rock - Dorrigo Half day

cathedral-rock-walkDorrigo - Ebor – Cathedral Rock – Dorrigo Half day

This could be a half day drive, or if you're energetic and want to see the fabulous views from Cathedral Rock, it could take a little longer. Enjoy a picnic lunch.

Take the Armidale Road out to the little village of Ebor.

1km past the town you come to the right-hand turn-off to the falls. Park your car and view the Upper Falls from the viewing platform then walk the 600 meters along the escarpment to view the Lower and Upper Falls - this makes a great photo. From this viewing platform you will be looking left over the thrilling wilderness area of Guy Fawkes National Park - so named because it was discovered by Guy Fawkes on the 5th November.

Back on the Armidale Road you will drive about 5km until you see the sign for Cathedral Rock National Park. Turn right here and it's an 8km drive into the Barokee Camping Area. It has very good facilities for picnicking too.

It's a one hour walk to Cathedral Rock and then another hour to climb the 400 meter trail to the top and back. But what a view! This is for the more adventurous with a bit of rock hopping involved. But you can also just do a circuit around the granite rock base if you like. It's a 2 hour hike from the carpark if you don't climb to the top, or 3 hours if you do.

You can also walk across to another amazing outcrop of rocks - Woolpack Rocks - so named because they look like enormous bales of wool piled on top of each other. There is something of the Picnic at Hanging Rock ambience in this area - fully appreciated by lovers of silence and rocks and sub-alpine heath and towering gums. It's another 2 hours return if you go to Woolpack Rocks. And it's very clearly sign-posted by National Parks so don't be afraid of getting lost!
